I have a XP pro rightly on a local network but I have some files in a file of sharing that I don't want accessible to everybody.

Well if you have Xp then you can use folder lock a software by which you can put a password to a folder or file. Just put the password and give it to the users which you wants to give access to it. But you have to install the software on the network computers which you will give permission.

There is no built-in option in Xp-pro to give password for files,

So use third party software like Folder lock from

yes this can be done with xp pro its not really a password but you can encrypt a folder so that when other users are logged into your computer they wont be able to access the folder. however if you only use one account that everyone shares this wont work or if you walk away from your computer and leave your account logged on than it wouldnt work either. right click on the folder- choose properties-click advanced-then check the box that says encrypt-hit ok- and thats it

Wow...you provide IT men a bad call...it is common...in the event that they desire their laptop fastened, they are going to make time to get you on, 1st off i can't think of what your fixing that signing as an admin would not be a stronger concept...yet only a similar...In my 24 years in IT, i've got purely had to hack a shoppers device a handful of cases, all of them on the shoppers request. shoppers would desire to locate time so which you will fix their device, in the event that they are actually not around and you may't log in as your self, then the concern waits...if there is quite a situation, I assure you the shopper WILL make time to be there.
