It appears they are having a clash of civilizations. There are the ones that are stuck in the 14th century and there the modern Muslims. The barbarians of the past are really making it bad for the modern Muslims.

The question about that particular atrocity could be asked and answered with respect to almost any in-group/out-group conflict, past and present ... Rwuana, Bosnia, you name it. It's frightening to observe how close we are to the temptation to give into hate and power.
One good analysis I read about what is *difficult* about Islam gave a combination of reasons:
1. Its scriptures prescribe not merely how to observe the practices of the religion but also the laws of their society - so it can be difficult for them to imagine the idea of a society whose laws change at the behest of the people and their representatives;
2. They don't have the equivalent of a Pope or Archbishop or whatever, and so there isn't a single person in authority who can guide them and speak for them. (Not that I personally care much for popes especially, but the point was well-taken);
3. Some aspects of Western culture really do distress them to the point where they would like to see them disappear ... just as, for example, we in the West are appalled by the notion of female circumcision or some other cultures' child-rearing practices.
But - the veneer of kindness towards one another is far too thin for comfort and it's a rare person for whom it doesn't exist at all.

i assume you are a christian? have you ever thought about the 100,000+ that have been killed when a christian nation (US/UK) attacked a muslim one (Iraq) - Bush has said god told him to do it.
so why cant christians and muslims get along would be a better question. they wernt killing each other at anything like the scale they are now before we arrived and made a mess of it all.
the other thing to note is most of the fighting in iraq is not sectarian. 90% of bombs are aimed at the US forces (source: Defense Intelligence Agency). what the US military and media are doing is moving the focus to sectarian fighting to cover for their own failings.
for example this article you reference. it speculates the killings are sectarian. for all we know these people could have been killed for any number of reasons - including by US/UK troops. We dont know if someone turns up dead that they were killed ony because of their religion.
I am not saying it doesn't happen of course - we need to take responsibility because we created the environment thats allows this to happen.

Islam needs to undergo a Reformation, much like Christianity did... It would probably have a similar peace-inducing effect.

Everything. Muslims can't live in peace and let live others. It is a cancer of this world. The next bad thing is Evangelical Christians.

Nothing inherently wrong with Islam. This is power politics. Is it any different from the Protestants and Christians who fought in Northern Ireland or the Huguenots and Catholics in France (centuries ago)?

The same that is wrong in all religions: that one group of people feels it is right and superior because they know the "truth" and the others don't.

Nothing is wrong with Islam, it's the believers who have their own interpretations and thinking at their own perspective, and do foolish and selfish things. They thought what they did can bring them to heaven. Stupid people.... Middle east is simply a cursed land, never been a day of peace since Christ.
