Alright first off, I was plunged into a world of Macs, when I was a senior in high school my cousin got me a 15" PowerBook G4 all because I mentioned ONCE that it would be useful as a graphic designer. Well that said, when I first turned it on I was amazed at the graphics! Now since this was the first time I ever owned a Mac it was surprising that I actually found it really easy to use. Don't be put off my people who say you have to learn a whole new system, because more often than not the mac has the same function using similar buttons, it's a no brainer!
As for performance I found it to be faster, smoother, tres beautiful, and I often joked with my friends by surfing into very spamful websites and not getting a single pop-up OR virus, it was hilarious. But anyways, another thing people say is about the compatability (well with these new ones you don't have to worry about it), but as a G4 user I really didn't care, I had Adobe CS, iChat, and Safari, that's all I really needed and it performed great!
Don't be put off by people who are jealous. Oh also, say you have to get Microsoft Office, I recommended my friend to an apple he got an iBook and he got Microsoft Office for Macs, and since it came with 3 licenses he gave me one!

I would prefer to buy a Mac, I'm a high school student and I have used an IBM laptop - it was no good. I got a macbook pro and it's really cool. Mac runs faster and safer. Macs are one of a kind.
