Before joning any police force, you need to get a degree in psychology. That is the key to understanding human behaviour. Most hostage negotiators are contracted to the police force.

becoming a hostage negotiator takes a number of steps, going thru police academy is just the first. It is similar to ranks in the millitary, you must put in the work at lower levels of service and thru promotions move to that position, you can begin with this position in mind and relate that to whoever is in charge but it wont happen as quick as you may expect. Also i commend you for your actions to the stranger that you talked out of suicide, that is a graet thing you did and you deserve recognition, but a sucicide negotiator is completely different from a hostage negotiator, people holding hostages are not suicidal they are in it for monetary gain or personal gain in one way or another these people have to be dealt with in a different manner . Maybe you would have a great future in a suicide hotline or a hospital that specializes in suicidal patients

Well there are two ways to get there. One involves going through the police academy, and going up through the ranks. You will have many opportunities to use such skills along the way, maybe not quite so dramatic, but useful nonetheless. While thusly employed, you apply for openings in the hostage negotiation team, and receive special training. If you are truly skilled at this type of situation, your co-workers will see that and will encourage you to move into this branch of the work.

OR

You can go get a college degree or three ending with a doctorate in psychology, and hopefully get hired to be a police psychologist.

You might want to start by volunteering at a suicide prevention hot-line. After that look into working for the Police Department, then S.W.A.T.
