Physiologically, it has been proven that the brain stores a permanent record of every sensory input it receives.

That being so, there is some point in the womb when that capability 'comes online' so to speak, and that would be ones earliest memory.

The key seems to be in ones ability to access and retreive that information.

The sense of smell, for some reason, stores data in a fashion that facilitates retreival of related sensory data. Smells bring memories back with a sudden fierceness sometimes - allowing us to experience a sort of deja-vu, but of a time and place we know that we had experienced previously in time.

The entire issue brings up the subject of the continuity and nature of time and relativity.

My earliest memory was around 9 or 10 months. It is so random I have no idea why I would remember this either. I remember my grandfather carrying me (cradling me like a baby) and walking down their hallway to the den. He was looking down at me and saying something and smiling. I remember moving my feet up and I could see the white booties I was wearing with red rosebuds on the ankles. I knew I had to be young because of the way he was carrying me and the fact that I was wearing booties. When I described the memory to my mom she knew exactly what outfit I was wearing too and it kind of freaked her out a bit. She dug up a photo of me wearing that outfit to show me. It was kind of a far away group shot but I could see the outfit and booties well enough to know those were the ones I saw. She guesses I was around 9 months at the time.

After that I don't think my memories picked up again until I was maybe 3 or so.

I think it is definitely reasonable to say someone could remember their birth or a brief moment of it. However, being born is one of the most traumatizing experience a baby goes through - and people do tend to "block" traumatizing experiences. So, I think it would be very rare to find someone who hadn't blocked this from their memory and can remember it - even a small detail. Especially in babies born in recent years with all of the pain medication used during labor now. It would be like being through the most traumatic event in your life, stoned and trying to remember it. Not too likely!

That taken into consideration, it is more likely that one would have a memory of being in the womb than being born. Though the memories of the womb would be limited to sounds (like the gurgling sounds baby make to mimic the sounds they heard in their mom's tummy) and touch. Obviously it is probably a little too dark in there to be able to see anything - and smell is probalby out of the option too since your nose and lungs are filled with amniotic fluid.

I came here because I believe I do remember being in the womb and some of the moments after I was born. I wonder if it is real memory.

I have a memory of my umbilical cord stump attached to my belly after I was born. It's just a small memory. I also remember what I was smelling at the time.

some human beings do have flash ideas that far again. for most although, those ideas are "implanted" because of being informed thoughts through mum and dad or relatives individuals or images. it really is conceivable!
