This is something that started when they got rid of the user rooms i think...have you seen the dateline specials? the ones about the 'net predators and pedophiles? that is why they log IP addys...that and to track who is lagging rooms and loading bots in the rooms....its a feature to ensure that everyone chatting is on the up and up and not there for more sinister motives........

All sites and chat clients record your IP address for future reference incase you abuse their service.
That's ok if you don't do anything bad.
