My advice is not to do it until you are ready. Pressure from directors is unfortunately very common. They make money when you sign up and sometimes just that one more consultant under them pushes them to a new level. You need to do what you feel is right. If you do choose to go ahead, remember that all you really need to spend is the initial $100 for a starter kit. In order to get that 50% off retail cost that they brag about, you will need to spend $200 (wholesale cost) every 3 months. However, you can also choose to let that lapse and as long as you spend at least $200 (wholesale cost) once a year you can remain a consultant. This director will try to get you to invest in inventory starting at about $600. If you have the money, great. If not, don't go into debt just to start this Mary Kay business. Have a party or two and then buy what you need. I don't believe you need to have inventory to have a sucessful Mary Kay business. What you do need is motivation and the ability to seek out customers. Do some research on the web. There are lots of negative & positive info about Mary Kay out there. Also, ask your friends & family if they would be interested in buying. If everyone of them says "no way" then you are pretty much starting out with NO customers or people to hold parties and that is really tough. Good Luck!

PLease please please, don't listen to all of this negativity! Just beacuse these people have had bad experiences with MK doesnt mean you will too! I am 19 years old, a college student and I work part time! I started my MK business 1 year ago and have loved every single minute of it! The $100 starter kit fee is so worth it because it is $367 in product for 100, so if you hate it you still have 367 in product for yourself. Not only has MK paid me big time, it has built my self confidence like crazy! I started out shy and nervous and not anymore! It opens you up and shows you that all things are possible and that you really can do anything! And You Can! Please give MK a try and definietly if you want email me if you need any great positive advice! crystalformarykay@yahoo.com
At first it will be over-whelming, but after your first sale or first recruit you will be so excited! If your director is being too pushy, just tell her that! Don't be scared! Good Luck and if you put your mind to it you will be great!

Yah, Mary Kay is expensive to start up selling. But the products are really good. I thought about joining up too but the cost of the starter kit kept me out. Plus I go to school and work and just would not have the time. So think about how much time you will have to put into this. The money for your starter kit is more like an investment so if you think you'll be having a lot of parties the money will come back to you quickly.

My advice is to run away from Mary Kay as fast as you can. I have a friend (ex-friend) who got involved, and seriously, Mary Kay is like a cult! My friend is one who got really over the top about Mary Kay, and it ruined our friendship. It got to the point that I could never see her or talk to her without being constantly pressured to buy Mary Kay stuff from her. All she talked about was Mary Kay. She was really into it. I swear it's cult-like. The company makes you shell out a lot of money so that you have an on-hand inventory of product. And face it, it's hard to sell their products because even though they are good, they are very expensive and it is more convenient for most people to pick up what they need from a department store or drug store. I do not believe in Mary Kay because of what I have seen. My advice would be to try another company such as Tupperware or Tastefully Simple where there is not so much pressure and competitiveness involved. Really, Mary Kay is awful and not worth it. Good luck.

Honey I went thru this excate same thing....except I went thru with it... I was told just to buy the 'starter kit' 100.00 no problem... then the told me to get my business running I had to buy more... and in order to get free stuff I would have to purchase over 600.00 in wholesale order! So I did!! I then started my business off just as they told me... going out getting customers, passing out pamplets, etc... The first two months I made only a whooping 300.00 not enough for the damage I made a few months ago! So I decided to sell the rest of my stuff on ebay and got my profit back! I am happy to say I am now out!!!
All Mary Kay is a chain of commandment....and they just want women to buy buy buy! Yea those cars are pretty and all the neat stuff that goes along with the business... But going dead broke and being stressed is not worth it!
Good Luck in whatever you decide to do!

$600 just to get started?!?!? That's crazy! Besides Mary Kay products aren't even all that great, and they are super expensive. You can get the same type of product at Wal-mart. My advice, if your still into starting a skin care/ cosmetics business, is to go with Aloette. It's only $40 to start and you NEVER have to buy inventory or deal with shipping of products. The products are better, the money is way better and there is no super pressure to do anything.

Just my two cents. I sell AVON and it only costs $10.00 to start. You can get a web site and do all your selliung ionline and you can buy books to help with the people that do shop online. As with any company you do have to take the time to work with your customers and to find customers but AVON has been around for 120 years and people love it. Avon does sell its self. You only need to stay active and that means ordering a 1 dollar order every two weeks. Avon also has many incentives ie: right now you can sign up and be entered into a drawing to win $1000.00. Mary Kay is alot harder sell than most companys that I have checked into.

tell the director that you would like to sign, just not now. tell her that you would probably be personal use consultant for now. if she's not agreeable to that, find a different director. you do NOT have to buy inventory to start. there will be directors who tell you that you do, but it is not true. start out at a level that is comfortable for you. if you don't like it, you are only out the $100 for the starter kit and there is alot of product in there that you can use for yourself (almost $400) or to give to your friends. if you have any other questions, you can email me at nkettler1@marykay.com

It sounds like a great thing to do. Have fun at it and you have the power to make women feel better about themselves. My mom and sisters swear by their Mary Kay products. I myself sell Avon and love it.
