3 men went on vaction and after pulling in there hotel choice the bellhop quickly scammpered out and helped the men with their belongings. Apon checking in the desk clerk said it was 30$ a night. Well each man agreed on paying 10$ each. A while later the desk clerk told the bellhop she felt bad because the rooms are only 25$ and she overcharged them. She gave the bellhop 5$ and asked him to bring it to their room. On his way up to the room he tried to think of how to split 5 dollar bills upon 3 men. So he kept 2 for his tip he wasnt paid and gave each man a dollar back.
Okay this is the thing: each man paid 10 each thats 30.
Got a dollar back that changes to 9 dollars they each ended up paying. So 9 times 3 is 27. Plus the 2 dollars the bellhop kept which now is 29. So where did the other dollar go????????????

if each man paid 10, the sum was 30
but now each man paid 9, so the sum is 27

you have to distract the 2 dollar from the 27, because the bellboy kept it: so endresult 25 (and that was how much the room was charged)

so no money disappeared, just wrong math...

It's a mindtrick... In fact it's more logical if you do this: the room costs 25 dollars
the bellboy kept 2 dollars (25+2=27)
the bellboy gave each man 1 dollar (27+1+1+1=30)

It is a false lead. $30 minus $2 minus $3 still equals $25 dollars. And if the 3 men had given $9 apiece ($27), they still would have had to pay an additional $1 apiece to tip the bellhop.

You are just confusing the one who reads this question.
But I will answer it.
30-5=25-they paid for the room
5-2=3-change they recieve
27-is the total expense
27+3=30
There is no money lost.
