The reason comes from the time before locked newspaper dispensers when people would pick up the top paper and read it and sometimes even take part of it then replace it on the top of the stack. To avoid getting a paper that had part of it missing, a newspaper buyer would take a paper from the middle of the stack. He did this presuming that only the top paper was preread and maybe incomplete.

Working in a shop that sells newspapers, i can honestly say that when we receive them in the morning the top copy is ALWAYS torn + dirty, from being thrown about in the van + also because the ties they use to bundle them together cut into it + rip it to shreds! However, we usually take this copy up to the staff room to read, leaving a pristine copy at the top for customers to buy. They still go for the next one down though!

why do people never take the newspaper that is on the top of the pile?
answer: most likely this newspaper has been read and to prevent catching germs from the previous reader.....

Cos kids grubby hands have usually been run over it and they usually look like they've been thrown into a hurricane and put back. I think though, because the papers are tied in a pile for delivery, so the one on top always gets crumpled from the string

I think the main reason is that it more likely that sections are missing.......I know if I get a Sunday paper I always take a paper from the middle......I have grabbed the one on top before only to find that many of the sections where missing or taken by someone.

When newspapers are bundled together the plastic strip that is used generally cuts into the top copy - and also the bottom copy too.

Becaus ethey're generally more crumpled, the front page is usually torn and the pages never quite go back together properly and neatly, so it's more difficult to hold. the supplements are often missing and they've been fondled by all sorts (so it's jealousy on my part probably!)

Haha! That is so true. I'm totally guilty of it myself.

I often find supplements are missing from the top one so go underneath. That only explains why I'd do it at weekends though.

During the week? I'm just a wierdo LOL

1. It's the one everyone grabs to look at before they buy a copy (it has been desecrated).

2. The print is (ever so) slightly faded because it has been exposed to light.

3. It's not as flat and finely pressed because it is on top and has nothing to press it down.

Giggle...'guilty.'

Everyone knows the the weight of the stack is protecting the papers at the bottom from losing the sale advertisements and the crappy little magazine that comes with it. Even so, it's "my .50 cents (execept on Sunday) and I want every crappy part."
