Please try www.asiarooms.com. I'll be in Sydney in December and our room in a central hotel worked out dirt cheap. Plus, the poor Australian currency makes spending online even cheaper when paying with pounds.

I stayed in the Stellar Hotel last year and it was fantastic. It was about a 5 minute walk from the train and bus terminals, right on the corner of hyde park and oxford street.

It was very clean, with private bathroom and not far from anything. URL is at the bottom, but if you search or ring direct you can get better prices. I stayed for $98 per night (aprox .£35)

Cheaper than that in Sydney and you start to get some nasty places - trust me on that! I would seriously look at staying in one of the award winning youth hostels in Sydney, but they are so good they book up really fast.

You'll struggle to find cheap accommodation. Formula 1 at kingscross probably your best bet but you'll be beside the red light district and the alcoholic Abbos but its still relatively safe.
Backpackers are a great way of meeting people but are very basic. After a few beers you dont notice this. So go backpacking and get lashed every night and blot out everything.
If you find a single room for £25 pound a night let me know.

Are you looking for hostel or hotel? This is the best website I've seen for discount hotel rooms in Sydney (I've been searching myself lately)

Sorry to say but you're probably going to have to pay more than that. Here's a list of some of the cheapest places...some have ensuite, some dont. http://www.uts.edu.au/div/iim/woc/travel.html
I wish I were there right now...I love Sydney!

Try one of the many many backpackers there:

http://www.ccbackpack.com.au/ccbudget.html
http://www.bcl.com.au/Sydney/sydneybackpackers.htm
http://www.sydneybackpackers.com/

Dorm rooms are much, much cheaper - though you do need to be careful about your gear.

Most of these places will have a variety of accomodation; inc. single rooms.
