Most definitely! The dress, however nice it is, probably cost less than half the amount the end user or consumer pays, they can afford it!
They will definitely take it back for store credit, so if your eye is on another fine garment then take it back sweetie!

can I just say that I love reading questions/answers from brits- you guys have such a way about your speach that even comes through in typing and I just luv it! ok, sorry- anyways:
as far as the dress, don't rip it. You could take it back but it is technically wrong. I would try to sell it online, and keep in mind most stores won't take it back w/out the tags on it after two weeks. Worst case scenario, if you can't sell it donate it to a church or consignment shop- that way you know someone will get to wear it again, even if it isn't you. And you might be making some girl's prom dreams come true or something... just a thought.

I think that they have a bad idea. Don't try to take it back to the store, you may end up in legal trouble by doing so. Many stores teach their clerks about what to look for to tell if clothing has been previously worn. If they can tell, you won't be able to return it, and they have the right to ban you from the store. I don't know about the laws where you live, but here in the US, they can even file charges against you for attempted fraud.
If it was me, I would hold on to it. You never know what's going to happen in the future, and you may wear it again sooner than you think, like to a wedding.
If you really want to sell it, you should either sell it yourself in the classifieds, on line auction, or consignment shop.
You obviously aren't comfortable with the idea of returning the dress, otherwise you wouldn't have posted. So go with your instincts, don't follow advice that's dishonest and possibly even against the law.

You could, but they will probably just say that you tore the dress and refuse and then you'll just be stuck with a torn £160 dress that can never be worn again.
Sell it, lend it to friends, make a charity job happy, find another posh do...many options.

That's tacky to return something after you 've worn it. If you don't think you will wear the dress again you have quite a few options.
A. alter the dress so that you can wear it again. cut it short and it can be a coctail dress.
B. Find a local boutique that may want to buy the dress from you
C. Sell it on E-bay.

You've already worn the dress. Either suck it up or find an alternative to recouping some of your lost money, such as a consignment shop or eBay. Returning that dress now would be WRONG!!!

I think that dress cost so much because of people like you that then want their money back. It's ridiculous. Next time buy something that you might wear more than once.

shops are very likely to fall for that one as it probably stinks of booze and fags
why not sell it on Ebay, clothes on there go like hot cakes, you'll probably get what you paid for it if it's a hot dress
or you could take it to a designer seconds shop, they're always on the look out for good stuff and pay top dollar

i wouldnt tear it, just take it back as it is. Use some excuse that the party or wedding got cancelled last minute and you dont need it now. They might just give you credit vouchers.
If you tear it and they dont refund it your ended up with a dress thats broken and useless.
