Yanaka - the area from Nishi-Nippori to Ueno. Lots of great little places: temples, shrines, cemetary, small old shitamachi houses, narrow streets, a golden kwannon statue.

Asakusa - lived here my first two weeks. Great traditional neighborhood without a lot of old time hustle and bustle.

Ueno - I love wandering around the Toshogu shrine area and the kiyomizu-dera temple copy. Also the market area is a fun place to hunt around.

Shibuya - modern wonders where half of tokyo meets the other half

Harajuku - meiji shrine and goth girls

I'd have to say Asakusa. There is the interesting and cute temple there and I like that litle shopping street that leads up to the temple. Very cute area.

I also like Shinjuku. It has an interesting atmosphere and stands out from the rest of Tokyo.

Tokyo is so huge that this is a tough question to answer.

My top 5
Shimokitazawa - Cool funky place filled with bars, restaurants all packed into small streets.

Shibuya - for everything it is, fashion, bars, coffee, restaurants, Shibuya has it all.

Harajuku - lots of hidden places that are great to visit like Good Honest Grub. Plus the Oshmans Sports in Harajuku has a decent stock of surfboards.

Ropoongi & Roppongi Hills - why? Toho Cinemas, you can catch the Midnight shows and by the time the show is over, the Metro is close to running again. Or you can head over to 6 Chome and hit up some bars.

Shinjuku is worth mentoning, a great place to eat and drink until 0500. Just keep away from the questionable people in Kabuki-cho.

From a Japanese point of view I like Shinjuku the best.
Kabukicho, Shinjuku Gyoen Park, Takashimaya Town Square, and the office district. It's just a whole mesh of culture, tradition, modern technology and simple human needs that it kinda summarizes Tokyo in one city.

Kabukicho is also so seedy that it just feels exciting in a dark sort of way. Love it.
