I've always wondered it Vader can survive without his suit. We see him in `empire` without the helmet, but what about the rest of the armour?

Does he wear normal clothing when he's not on duty?

If you watched Ep 3, He was in extremely bad shape. The suit is like a walking Iron lung and life support. Without it, he would die pretty painfully. You only see him for a moment with his helmet not fully attached, and that's in Ep 5, when an officer tells him about the asteroid field issue. The "sphere" he was sitting in must be some sort of pressurised Iron lung room.

he wears it all of the time, (except, maybe sleeping, in his Iron lung room.)

No, I don't think so.

In the end of the most recent star wars, where he is 'turned' into Darth Vader, you can see he was pretty badly messed up from falling in to that lava pit thingy (burnt off limbs and all that...)

So I think that the whole Darth Vader suit is what is holding him together and keepign him alive.

He must be pretty smelly under that suit, that is all I can say.

Darth Vader in reality is just like a nurd, may be a super nurd. He was pushed around so much in his childhood by bullies that he went whack and angry thus got the name DARTH VADER. He his afraid of taking his suit off because he is a NURD.

On his breaks from running the Death Star, the lunch breaks I mean, he wears some hardcore Nike gear. But he's been known to wear Puma, Adidas, and other stuff also. I think I've seen some pics of him in the Sun magazine, at the supermarket yesterday....

Now seriously...he would suffocate if he would be without mask. If you seen SW part 3 it would be obvious....

I kind of always thought that the suit was part of his body.....After his accidents and lightsaber mishaps didn't he have a bionic arm, leg, torso, etc.....something like that? I always thought the lights on the front thingy were like meters guaging his breathing, etc. He probably has a lot of chafing action going on under there that is all I can say for sure!

He can't survive without it. He is mostly machine in the episodes 4,5, and 6. That is why you only see his face when he takes his helmet off, because he is already dieing. So he needs it to survive. He begs Luke in the end to take his helmet off, so that his son can see his fae before he dies. So no, he doesn't wear normal clothes when he is "off duty". And what they said VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV. They had to rebuild him in order to keep him on their side, so they had to give him some way to move aroud, breathe, etc.

Without the suit he has hands, or legs and his body is scorched. He would probably die without the suit. It seems to control his heart lungs and kidneys.

And he is never off duty.

Big Jay is correct, the suit is his life support, without it he would die.

AS for taking a crap, must be a "trapdoor" in the back that they never show in the movies!!!! LOL
