Interesting question. I can't say I've ever seen graffiti that I considered "smart." I watched a program once that explained how gangs use graffiti to mark their territory. The narrator would go around and white wash over the graffiti and it would be back the next day. I don't think it's cool or "smart" to deface property that doesn't belong to you.

Not sure who it is, but there is a graffitist going around at the moment who uses a stensil on really dirty road signs and cleans off the part that is the artwork, it looks amazing!
