I think not having a stable temperature in the aquarium is the biggest killer. Just a change of a few degrees will either kill fish outright or take away their resistance to diseases. Ich is the most common disease that attacks when the temperature in the aquarium drops. The other big killer of aquarium fish is overfeeding.

Temperature is a big killer and chemicals.. Keep the tank clean AND stable. Follow feeding directions carefully underfed fish will die easily and overfed fish will die also, not only from being over fed but being overfed causes them to produce more waste and that is harmful to them. Personally I had more trouble maintaining a saltwater tank than a fresh water one and tropical fish didnt last long the 2 that I had, but the fantails and gold fish i had lived anywhere from 3-7 years. Make sure your not changing the water too often. Check your chemicals often and make sure they are stable. Good luck!

Your fish may have died from old age. Being new to the idea of having fish, it took me a while to balance the tank. I had goldfish for about 2 years and then they started dying. I added some koi, and they lasted a good while. The last I gave to a friend with a pond as it had outgrown my 75 gallon tank. The website below explains the life expectancy of fish.

If they lasted 2 years, maybe they are dying from old age. Small animals and small fish don't have very long lifespans.

When you buy adult size fish from a pet store, you usually have no idea how old they are when you get them. Assume you buy a tetra from a pet shop that is one year old already. If it lives 2 years more in your tank, it will probably die from old age! Maybe it was 2 years old already. Then it might only last 1 more year.

The fish do have short lifespans, although if they are dying at the same taim, you have probably had some sort of problem with water in your tank.

i believe that of all your fish that will live the longest. sucker fishes are the longest lasting and most water resistent. fishes.it is neally imposible to kill them and they look funny running up the side of the tank
