On June 14, Missouri Governor Matt Blunt signed House Bill 1456 into law, which will prevent employees discharged for using drugs and alcohol and employees discharged because of absenteeism and tardiness from collecting unemployment compensation.
Also, if you were hired for a job, and then failed the pre-employment drug test and were fired, you cannot collect unemployment.
In other words, it's not the unemployment office that administers the drug test; it's related to your employment.

Unemployment benefits are paid out by the state (not the Federal government). Each state has its own rules about unemployment benefits. The Federal government might step in to extend benefits from time to time but it's mostly a state government thing. I think TN is doing that. I know that they will deny a worker's compensation claim if you test positive for any of five drugs. Employers will get a discount on their worker's compensation insurance premiums if they implement a drug-free workplace random and pre-employment drug and alcohol testing program.

could be true as long as its done right after you leave a job or right before a new one. They could be verifying you left for the reasons you said you left, and they have a right to test you before a new job, but that should be up to the new company not unemployment. I don't see how they could get away with it, but think about it: they aren't gonna pay you to be unemployed and a drug user. The idea is to pay you while you find a new job, so they are probably just trying to "scare you straight" so to speak.

Its not true in Missouri (MO) I deal with people on unemployment daily, in Mo. its all done by phone! However its a great idea as people on public assistance of any kind should not use our tax dollars to purchase recreational drugs, or booze, I don't mind paying to help the needy, but not to finance a party!

Unemployment is an insurance policy for people that the companies have to pay premiums on. Why shouldn't they ask for/pay for a drug test. The benefits outweigh the costs.

I am from Indiana and can tell you that my husband never had to take a drug test when he went on unemployment so I guess it depends on the state.

Never heard that. But it does make sense to some degree, why should people with drug problems or even alcohol problems receive benefits to continue their habit when they could clean up their act and get a job.

I say this -- it is ABOUT TIME! There is no way that my hard earned taxpayer dollars should go to pay unemployment benefits to someone who is fired or discharged from their employment for using Drugs/Alcohol or other Addictions.

I have been reading about that. They are trying to pass it or thinking about it. Mandatory drug testing for people who are on govt. programs (welfare, etc) and unemployment. I have no idea if they had passed it or they are voting on it. I really don't think it's such a bad idea for people on welfare.

I never heard about it.....I don't think is true. It would cost the government millions and millions of dollars if they start doing that.
