I live in PA and it's pretty much all volunteer firefighters. I am one myself. My question is why after 9/11 everyone respected firefighters and not today your lucky to get the bird from them. I was responding to a accident yesterday with a person traped in the car in the river. Now if people would respcet firefighters they would move out of the way when a blue light was coming up behind them. I know if it was them laying in that car they would want you to get there or if there house was on fire. So what is the deal with people.

I live in TN.... and I see that ALL the time... cars not getting out of the way for police ambulance or fire trucks... people are just stupid and in a hurry to go nowhere... your right about one thing though if they were laying in the street somewhere waiting on a rescue they would want those people they as soon as possible...

I sympathize. I used to be a volunteer FF too, usually drove whichever vehicle we were responding in (brush pumper, rescue squad or engine) and it was always a big problem. Sometimes wish we could put the push bumpers that highway pratrolmen have, and just knock the idiots out of the way.,

Also witnessed the same change--when the Murrah building was bombed, for a couple of years afterwards anytime there was a flashing red or blue light, everyone on both sides of the road pulled off and stopped. It was neat! Now that it has been 10 years, most people don't bother, and make the emergency vehicle get out of the way, unless it happens to be a cop.

I am so sorry you are having this experience. What you are doing is very important and most of us are very grateful to you. To change this situation, we do not need to impose some discipline from the top down, we need to grow a sense of respect from the inside out.
