Dinner, is a main meal served after 6 pm
Luncheon (lunch) is middle of the day onwards , so can be served at say 4 pm

Tea, should be cups of tea, cakes, biscuits, bread and jam served in the afternoon.

Lower social/economic groups, call lunch "dinner" and dinner "tea"
I always laugh when I hear people say "what are we cooking for tea?"

What book is it you refer to? Mrs Beaton it cant be, nor can it be from good housekeeping. I think you should throw that book away, Etiquette is

Breakfast, lunch, tea, dinner,
tea comprising a cup of tea and maybe a piece of cake.

Anything else is purely down to your social class, dinner at lunchtime and a cooked "tea" means you are from the lower echelons

It depends on where you are. If you were here you would be wrong. We have breakfast , lunch and dinner. We drink tea.

its a regional thing :) i grew up in maine (usa) where you have breakfast, dinner, supper. - lunch was a snack. moved to pennyslvania where its breakfast , lunch ,dinner. and snack is snack. got to the point where because i have 8 kids in school i end up just saying "time to eat" or "be home in time to eat" so much easier then getting my butt corrected constantly. oh yeah and then theres also things like few / couple . to me a few always meant a small handfull and a couple meant 2 . but here in pa you ask for a couple and they give you a few. strange !!

Traditionally it should be Breakfast, Elevenses, Lunch , Afternoon Tea, Supper, Dinner (you can obviously cut elevenses and afternoon tea) and usually go for either Supper or Dinner!

Confused?!?!?

i always say the same as you, and my argument is always if its called lunch why is it school dinners?

i understand everyone does things a little different but i'm now confusing my daughter who's two by telling her i'm doing dinner when my hubby says lunch so i'm trying to change it to saying lunch for her sake because everyone else tells me i'm wrong. however at the moment i'm getting myself so confused that she's having breakfast, dinner and dinner!

oh well as long as she knows she's getting food what does it matter!
