Well If you want to sell it i would use a program Called Killdisk. That way the infomation on the disk cannot be recovered or really hard to recover. Useing format c: will just delete the hard drive but can be simply recovered. All you do is go to this site http://www.killdisk.com download the program and install it on a floppy disk. Reboot your pc with this disk in and follow the the directions. It a simple program to use and your information will be a lot harder to recover then just doing a format c. This will complete wipe out anything thats on the drive

There are several options depending on what you want to do with the computer afterwords.
The safest thing to do is wipe out the entire contents of the hard disk, which included all the programs and the operating system. You can if you choose reload the OS and software after clearing the disk. If you don't go this way there is always a possibility of leaving some important and/or personal behind.
There are a number of commercial "wipe" programs that allow you to remove the disk information and insure it is generally unrecoverable. You may even find a couple of freeware or shareware programs at download.com, freeware.com, or shareware.com
You can also use the old DOS format command but unless you specify and unconditional format the data can be recovered.
You can also go into the BIOS and play around with the partition settings it will warn you, you are about to destroy the information on the disk but that is the objective here.
Of course if you are getting rid of the system you can also apply a hammer to the hard disk, this would even give the NSA a run for their money.

You need to format your hard drive with a very strong deletion program. Simply reformatting it is not enough for people with the right software. A lot of information can be restored. Try the link supplied below. Good luck!

Re-boot your computer. In other words put mit back to factory settings. This will remove everything you have installed or saved on it.
