Both the university system in my state and the local adult education system use social security numbers as student identification numbers, and I don't like it. Are there alternatives?

Most universities dropped social security numbers a decade ago, as did the military.

They simply assigned serial numbers -- exactly what they did before the use of SSNs came into vogue in the 1970s. I believe that driving license issuing agencies have also stopped using SSNs.

I should have thought that using a SSN for student records today is unlawful. But apparently not: see this GAO report (mentioned at p. 9): http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d0411.pdf (PDF)

Identity theft of a student number/SSN is discussed here: http://www.whitehouse.gov/ask/20040715.html

I don't think a social security number can be demanded of you except for legit social security purposes. I worked for an insurance company that would occasional get some one who would not want to give us his number and we would just assign him a number like
000-00-0001 and then the next guy would be 000-00-0002. We had to do it this way or the computer would not recognize the numbers. We couldn't just put in a 1. You may have to kick up a fuss because nobody wants to do this.

there are alternatives to social security numbers. the state of Virginia used to use social security numbers on the drivers license until the residents fought to have that changed in light of all the identity thefts.... so if they can do it... the university can do it as well. check with the university.. it may be an option you can insist upon.

Fingerprints, also quite impractical on a large scale. per chance for mandatory files (and that i imagine from time to time they are used) yet in the different case it does no longer exercising consultation o.k.. Plus, what if you're an company, a banker, authorities worker, etc, and opt to look someone up someone's report. how are you going to seek for by fingerprint? different human beings have the same call and if you're looking via archives how the heck are you going to get the right man or woman with a photo of a fingerprint? someone ought to scouse borrow a fingerprint in any case. Xerox something with a fingerprint, enhance it off any style of surfaces which may be quite basic to do and far better handy than a social safe practices form, or if you're truly nasty you should decrease someone's finger off and do not imagine that does no longer ensue. a particular figuring out form is the most sensible and occasional fee technique of figuring out a particular man or woman. that is not any longer suitable even though it truly works. there is truly no suitable id device it truly is why you want to be very careful who you provide your suggestion to.

My son's school uses the month and day of birth and adds another number to depict how many others have the same date.

ex. September 28 would be:
1st. student- 092801
2nd. student- 092802
