Originally we had 9 planets:

Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
Pluto

Recently the International Astronomical Union ruled Pluto is too small to be a planet as some of the satellities and asteroids were bigger than it. Therefore the 'new Solar System' consists of 8 planets:

Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune

and 3 dwarf planets::
Pluto
Ceres

The scientists agreed that for a celestial body to qualify as a planet:

it must be in orbit around the Sun
it must be large enough that it takes on a nearly round shape
it has cleared its orbit of other objects

I can share some of your perspective. I think the government and or space program might be looking into that. Though I have no way of knowing for sure. Despite the abuse we put out on the planet, it, like all it's creatures, will find some way to adapt to it. Then again if we mess up big time, we might get the wakeup call that is needed and think about alternatives.

There are countless millions of planets in the universe, but in our solar system there are only eight (Pluto has just been down-graded and is no longer considered a planet).
