Transmission fluid has a filter the same as oil does. It needs to be changed because it will stop up and starve your transmission of fluid and will burn it up. I would NOT suggest that you take it to one of the quick lube places though and have them put it on their flushing machine. All this does is wash the fluid back and forth which can collapse the filter (they do not change your filter when they flush it with this machine) or in some instances completely unlodge the filter and in either case can still cause it to starve it of fluid and burn it up. Take it to a garage and request that they change the filter, add new fluid, and flush the remaining old fluid out of the convertor. Flushing the remaining fluid out is a fairly easy operation which consists of taking the cooler lines loose, starting the vehicle (someone else will need to start it because the 1st person needs to hold the lines into a drain bucket) when the fluid starts to come out a nice red clean color, turn the vehicle off, reattach the cooler lines and add fluid as needed to refill. Check the cooler lines and around the pan to make sure that there aren't any leaks. You're transmission will love you for it. Our garage charges an average of $100-125 for this operation, but it is much cheaper than rebuilding your transmission because of neglect.

Great Vehicle, just stay on top of the regular scheduled maintenance, you know oil chances & all filters , and the trans should be done or looked at 24,000 miles, or how you drive ,all you do is go by the smell, of the Tran's fluid and color, brown needs serviced, and must be nice red color and when clutch material in the trans burns it will turn the fluid brown and smell very bad, smell any new fluid ,and compare OK, trust me you will know it when you smell it,

If the transmission fluid has never been changed, it should be. Even if the car doesnt have a lot of miles on it. Its been there for 7 years, and has probably broke down . So fresh fluid will be good for another 50k and a lotta years.

Now is not the time to wash away neglect. Some time just changing oil in a T-65E transmission will make it start slipping. Leave it alone you might get several more years to save up for a remanufactured transmission.

get it changed. especially if it hasnt been changed since. and keep on it, regularly changing it will extend the life of your tranny. just make sure you dont have any issues right now, as once you change the fluid if there was something wrong it will get worse in a hurry.
