You should be playing up your bottom half, and drawing the eye downwards. There are many tricks to balance out your body to give you a more even shape.
Avoid fitted tops, look for looser styles, but not bulky, that flow with your body.
V-Necks, scoops, and elongated necklines will slenderize your neck and chest, avoid square, boat, off the shoulder, and halters that can draw the eye up and out.
Longer tunic style tops can help hide the waist, and slenderize your upper body, stay avay from cropped and half shirts that stop around your waistline.
Find bottoms that accentuate your legs with brighter or lighter colors and patterns. Keep tops simple, and in darker colors.
If you don't have a large bust, empire waistlines may work well for you. They draw the eye up, emphasis a less than full bust line, and can add some curves when paired with princess seaming.
Runched and gathered tops and dresses can also help you to hide a larger mid-section giving you a leaner more curvy look.
Another look that's great for giving a smaller look to the waist is the wrap dress.
You can also try a bias cut dress, they gently flow over your curves without any definite waistlines adding a balanced look to most any body.
Look for 3/4 length or long sleeves to help keep the eye away from wider shoulder and chests.
Jackets should fall about your hip level to keep the eye focused on the bottom half, and off of your top. Boleros, shrugs, and waist length jackets only add bulk on the top.
Don't tuck in shirts, or belt things tightly at the waist. All is does is make you look wider, and your hips look smaller.
Wide belts are in this fall, if you opt to wear them, pair them with a long top left out and let the belt sit loosely on your lower waist at the top of your hips.
Stay away from leggings and tights. I know that they are in right now, but they will only make your bottom look smaller, and your top look heavier.
There are several sites out there with more tips and tricks that may help you to look your best.
