if you look under the hood you will see the a.c compressor. the serpentine belt that is powered from the crankshaft once the motor is running powers the smaller components of youre automobile. that belt runs around the fan to cool the engine, youre power steering unit. the alternator that gives you electricity and recharges youre battery, and also air conditiong compressor. the ac compressor is very hard to turn over and to the best of my knowledge requires 7 hp to operate it. and as i have seen in other answers it doesnt cause youre engine to have more rpm,s. revolutions per minute. it just makes the engine work harder powering the a.c compressor at the same rpm,s therefore it burns more fuel.

The compressor requires energy to drive it. The bigger the car engine, the less noticeable this is, so if you have a V8 USA 60s vehicle, it won't make much difference. However a small 4 cyl will lose a lot of power and fuel efficiency.

A car gives less mileage when the AC is on because the AC uses more power and hence your fuel consumption is more and the Kilometres you can run in one unit of fuel reduces.

When u switch on the AC, the engine has to share its energy to drive another pump. which is called as AC Compressor.
so, its like adding additional load on the engine, that's why, engine needs more fuel to drive this additional load, resulting in less mileage.

some of the energy produced goes to run the ac. the actual energy running the car is much less than what is provided when the ac is off.

well it is not only in your car...
it is in all cars when the A/C works, it takes nearly 10% of your car engine output..... (sure when your car engine is bigger, you will not suffer from this problem while during, but it remains taking extra amount of fuel)
