Ever notice how warm water in the shower loosens up the mucus in your nose and throat? It's the same principle in use when one drinks warm soup or tea instead of eating ice cream while they've got a sinus infection and sore throat. Next time you or your child have a very stuffy nose, try this to see it in action: Get a wash cloth very warm (not hot) and put it up to and on the nose and sinus area. The relief should be almost immediate! If you put a cold wash cloth to your face, there would be some pain and no relief at all. So it's not that you shouldn't have cold food while sick, but it's better to have warm.

I've never heard this as a prohibition of cold food but rather as a promotion of warm foods and beverages (chicken soup, tea, etc.) which increase the blood supply to the throat and nasal passages and cut down on the mucous production and congestion.

Keep yourself well hydrated with plenty of fluids.

As long as you stay away from dairy products it doesnt matter the tempature Of what you eat/drink. Fruit juice ice pops can help with a sore thoart more then tea becuase they numb the throat

if you have a cold you still need to keep the fluids up (warm or cold)... maybe it's an old wives tale but I hear the only thing you shouldn't consume is dairy products - milk, yogurt... because they thicken the mucus in your throat.

No. That is not true. You need plenty of fluids when you are sick.
