Most governments usually have help for low income families in paying their gas and electric bills during the winters. It is hard to qualify for these, but well worth it in helping low income families along in life.
There are also programs that will help pay for some medications. And if you have a disabled member, some home care and care appliances. These are usually provincially funded through the health organizations here in Canada.
Then there are federal assistance grants available to low income families with children younger than 7 years old. These are dependant on your yearly income from all sources, and can be applied for through the same body that administers the more usual Family Benefits payments.

I am sorry to see these responses which without taken into consideration that you may be a divorced or widow thought that you are unmarried single parent. I think if you contact one of those single parent or women support groups in your local area you may find better answer. Support system is usually more local and even federal and state funds come to the local system. Try internet or phone directory for start or may be check with some church! I am sorry I can not give you more useful information which I am sure is out there.
For all those who made fun of this person, just think if you do not have a family and you have lost a spouse by divorce and death and you have two young kids, how can you manage a full time job? Even if you get a job, then considering the ridiculously low minimum wage and expense of day care, how can a single parent afford to live reasonably? This government has given us a gift of higher prices of oil, food, rents and everything but no rise in minimum wage. And by the way I am not biased or feminist. I am a man and by the grace of Allah well off enough to live well. However, I am a human being and unless I do not know the facts I would not disgrace a person who is just asking her/his rights in the society.
Peace!!

I don't think there should be anything more for single parents. It's so easy for a girl to give birth to a child without being married and then obtain a free flat and free income so that she can sit on her a*se and do nothing. That's hardly an incentive to get married or to work for a living. It's just encouraging immorality, and we tax payers have to foot the bill. It's so unfair.

There are grants for schooling, child care while schooling, yes. Car allowances for transportation while at school or working. Help with utility bills, food. All states are different, check with your local Social Worker, she/he has all those answers.

The government doesn't care about you. They just care about soon implementing what's NEXT on their agenda!...
