I don't know if that is the figure, but it is sad. (Many people count the number of marriages in a year, and the number of divorces, to come up with the rate. But that fails to take into account the people who are married, and stay married, all year.) People don't make the proper commitment, or don't follow through.

PS Women (and men) with attitudes like the responder just below me might be part of the problem.

Times have changed and divorce has gone from being a scandal that when talked about it was said in a whisper to a very common thing. Divorces are so easy to have anymore that people dont always marry for the right reason because they know that can end the marriage at anytime . Plus you have to take into consideration that most of the women who were trapped in an abusive marriage now have more help than ever getting out of it.

In Asian countries, many women are not educated. when they get married, they stay married becoz of survival. Should they divorce, what can they do? The husband becomes the sole provider for the family and she relies solely on him for her whole life.

Having said that, in Asian countries that are getting more developed like Singapore, the trend is changing and so does the rate of divorce. Women dun feel that they need to stay in a marriage that is not working as they become more financially independent. Education is an integral part of the American and European society, most of the women in these countries are educated, so they dun feel like they need to stick around when things aren't working out.

Another question to ponder...why aren't women marrying? That's also a problem in developed societies. Coz they dun need a man to live.

Once someone is unhappy in the marriage, there is no reason to keep them intact. The church doesn't play as much of a role in keeping marriages together, and there are no longer any other mechanism to keep marriages together in those societies.

In other societies where women are treated like property, I'm sure the divorce rate is much lower. Religion and tradition play a larger role in keeping these marriages together. Regardless of whether they are happy marriages or not.

I believe getting married at a young age has alot to do with it! A person you would marry at 20 would probably not be the person you would marry at 30. I think it is important to know where you are going in life before you take on the responsibility of another. I know this is easier said than done but, if you would put more importance on education I think it would help!

Because women in those areas realize that they are not chattel and are not trapped in marriages with men who treat them that way. As for elsewhere, I don't think has to do with any moral value, it has more to do with prisoners not trying to escape a prison in the middle of a desert.

Because people now days are not commited. They don't take their vows seriously. This commitment is until death do us part. People walk out because they are tired of each other. If I divorced my hubby everytime he pissed me off, we would get a divorce everyday.

Because the younger generation has tossed out the concepts of loyalty, commitment, marriage, trust, and everything else that goes with having a life partner.

Its a me...me...me generation. And much like ancient Rome...I think we will, as a race, end up paying for it.
