i have thought that very thing for a long time. i think they should make the median wage of the people they serve. they shouldn't be able to set their own wages. what a great big waste of resources just to support the welfare bunch on capitol hill. maybe i'll write something in my blog, thanks to this question.

I deal with "public servents" daily. They should be paid the reflective wage when they can run an efficient organization. Many government organizations have too many people on staff for the work they do and many of them can't even do the job right the 1st time.

As a public servant I take offense...
My husband is a soldier who makes below minimum wage despite 10 years of service, if factor in the long hours he works and the 24/7 on call status....
I am a veteran and I work my *** off all day long supporting the the US Army, I would hardly call myself rich...
If you are referring to our elected officials...ok...I agree, they only have to serve one term and get their salary for life, they can vote themselves raises, yet our soldiers don't have the equipment they need...

Obviously. If you're making damn near millions and your employees are struggling, it's not because they have a work-ethic deficiency. It's because of neglect towards employees. That's why unions were so much fought for.
