Hey

I used to have incredibley painful periods from the age of 13, so at the age of 14 I was put on the pill. It was great it really calmed the symptoms down. And eventually I found by age 18+ I wasn't really getting much discomfort at all, I could cope without the neurofen.

Well I am now 21 and I had to change the pill I was on because I can't get hold of it at the Chemist. And it is awful!!

6 months of really painful periods combined with horrendous dull backache. I have had to take time off work, I can't sleep and I end up walking round and round trying to make it better. I take as much neurofen as I can get but it just makes it a little easier not better.

I've now seen 2 Dr's who both say they won't & can't change my pill over painful periods. That period pain is not caused by or solved by the pill. I've argued that it did indeed solve it for years. But all I've gotten is a take neurofen and drink more water?! What!!

Is this true? Can I expect to have to put up with this?

Just adding I first saw a male Dr and he was very rude obviously thought period pains were made up.

So I went to see a female Dr at my mum's place she said exactly the same.

How can they say that period pain is not solved by the pill when many GP's prescribe it for heavy painful periods? Its not the heaviness of loss that makes it painful its the cramping. I had the same attitude when I was young, my gp told me it was 'just a bit of cramp and go home with a hot water bottle'...yeah? well MR you deal with it, I never had anything that was termed as 'natural and nothing to worry about' that was so debilitating. 36 years on and my daughter seems to be following in my footsteps...off we pop to the GP who merrily prescribes the pill stating that it will help with the flow and ease the pain....why does the medical profession contradict itself daily.? Don;t let them fob you off...its not fair, if this medication helped, what is the reason for not represcribing it to you. Please persevere, change gp's, try a family planning clinic as they sometimes can be more helpful with 'womens problems', don't let them fob you off, I suffered for years, was pumped fulll of all kinds of wonder drugs only to end up needing a hysterectomy at 26....Try reflexology for the pain....it works wonders!! Promise

I too suffered from terrible pains and was put on the pill at a young age - told by my Doctor that "it would assist with the pain" so how contradictory of you Dr to now say no they won't change. I would make up other symptoms head aches and anything else you can think of to get it changed.

I can no longer take the pill, my body doesn't agree with it at all and i have had the coil fitted, this maybe a myth but i take evening primrose oil every day and this seems to help with the pain. You don' t want to be taking painkillers to often as your body will become immune to it and they won't help the pain anymore.

Have you tried a clinic they maybe more sympathetic.

Wishing you luck

You should NOT have to put up with this! It is making you ill ffs! Go back to your doctor, see if you can see another one if possible, get tearful is always a good thing too because it will make them either want to help you more or they'll just want you out of there and happy in record time! Don't take no for an answer, tell them its affecting your whole life and that you can't live like that!

Seriously the only way to get thru sometimes is to make a great big fuss and put your foot down. Good luck tho, i sympathise with you having been on the coil and two different pills so far this year myself.

Seriously, you should try acupuncture! I also have horrendous period pain, but I've seen my needle woman for a year now and it's been reduced to one day. And I'm not on the pill at all. I also get footzone therapy, or acupressure, by the same woman. What this one day pain is concerned, it's there the second or third day. When I take to ibuprofen it disappears after half an hour and it's gone for the rest of the day. And best of all; it doesn't return. My period lasts for 8 days, so it's a great 'deal'... ;)

its a well known fact that going on the pill can regulate your periods, and stop them from being so uncomfortable. i think that most women would agree that the whole experience is a better one when on the pill.

i think the problem here may be with money. one type of pill can cost more than another, so in a bid to save money your doctor is refusing you.

are the doctors male or female? try seeing one of the opposite sex.

i dont think that you should have to put up with this at all. doctors are there to help you and changing the pill you take obviously would in this case. i would maybe do a bit a research into it and then think about making a complaint.

I had the same exact type of periods as you, and I went on the pill years ago. However, now that I'm in my thirties, and I smoke, my doctor recommended I go off of it. I was so nervous to get my period after being off of it. I would rather die than put up with that. What seems to work for me is a week before I'm due, I take the strongest dose of midol for a few days in a row, and it kind of helps. It makes them not as painful. It may work for you too.

Have you ever thought of trying the depo-provera injection? You get it every 3 months and 9 out of 10 women have no periods at all. There is no reason why a doctor cannot alter your pill to suit your particular cycle. Natural remedies to try also are agnus castus tablets, vitamin B6, also evening primrose. Hope this helps.

I get bad period pains too but I take nurofen and it always does the job by taking the pain away. Before that I use to just sleep the pain off and by the time I wake up the pains gone. You should just stick to the same pill that you've been taking.

try seeing a chinese doctor or one who does acupuncture and massage. It usually helps increase blood circulation and decrease or ease the pain.

Also try exercising and limit your cold water/food intake. try to drink hot water or putting a hot water bottle between your thighs or the place you feel painful. It helps alot to wear more clothing too. to keep yourself warm.

hope this helps. med only stop the symptoms not make your body stronger.
