I am in chennai and having BSNL telephone line at home but I don't want BSNL broadband as I won't be using it regularly.

Suggest a cheap & best dialup internet connection for occasional use.

BSNL has both broadband and dial-up connections. Go for BSNL as you wil be asured that there is no hidden cost. In Delhi I use MTNL broadband paying Rs.300 (with taxes) a month. It is pretty good -- both speed and service wise.

1)Needs good basic local phoneline infrastructure in the first place. 2)Needs robust and super high speed telecommunication backbone to the rest of the major telecoms around the world. On a scale of 10 stars for both, i think india only score 3 at rural areas. And maybe 6 in the city like Mumbai. To reach true high speed internet u need to score atleast 8. Meaning India needs to build a better infrastructure.

Airtel 250/- is best for occasinal use, i think they have night free scheme in this plan for this month(september) alone or for first month(after installation) alone, VSNL home plans starts with 300 and above, they have dedicated lines and give good speed.... both these have good customer service and installation charge is more or less same, but bsnl have a bad customer service...

I think Airtel prepaid connection Rs 10/- per day. For activate SMS MO at 686 which will charge you Rs3/- per SMS and for deactivate SMS UNMO at 686 which will also charge Rs3/- per SMS. So dis cheapest and u can use occasionally and even regularly.
