codecs are only for the programme such as windows media player to be albe to decode the file to show it ...codecs have no connection with the dvd driver itself . ...sounds like it needs replacing

If the player light stays on or flashes for a long time after putting in your disc then the problem is in the drive itself. Are the DVD's you're trying to play standard or DIVX files because if they are not DVD files then you'll need codecs to run them: www.free-codecs.com

Don't think it has got anything to do with codecs... but if it is, installing the latest Media Player should do the trick.

More likely it is that there's a problem with the player itself - and replacing is cheaper than repairing in that case. Have someone (with IT-knowledge) look at it.

It maybe the drive has simply failed and needs replacing. Or you could try downloading some codecs. Look them up on the internet.

Check to see if windows or the bios is finding the drive
It should show on screen during bootup or open my computer see if it is showing in there. or check the device manager see if its working properly

The driver could be missing and need installing again
