There's no exact way to answer this because you haven't stated whether the items all cost the same price or they varied in price - you could have bought one big item for £10 and the other 299 for £39, maybe it was a huge box of safety pins or something? There's a million different potential solutions!

Does the question state that all of the 300 items are the same price?

If so, just divide 49.00 by 300.

1 item costs you 49.00/300. Because 300 items cost you 49.00, it means that 49.00 is 300 times bigger than the price of one item. This all works, of course, if you presume that all items have the same price!

16 pence, surely.
What's the prob ??

300 items cost £49
Therefore 1 item costs 49/300 = 16 and 1/3 pence.

there is no way of knowing without further information
the average price is 16.3 recurring, theoretically an invalid price in the UK

if you make some assumptions (that all items were the same or the same price, then there is some other cost included (eg shipping / P&P or VAT)) or the item is sold in bulk

failing that the 300 items comprise different products or different prices

Are all the items the same price?

Do the items cost £49.00 each? If so, "what was the cost?" would be the wrong question. It would be "What is the cost?".

49 divided by 300 is the average price of an item.

Why are you asking? Because you have nothing better to do with your time. The same reason I'm answering your silly question. If you want a better answer then you need to provide more information.

Instead of dabbling in psychology perhaps a quick class on long division would help you, or failing that calculators are pretty cheap now.
