Chikungunya is a relatively rare form of viral fever caused by an alphavirus that is spread by mosquito bites from the Aedes aegypti mosquito, though recent research by the Pasteur Institute in Paris claims the virus has suffered a mutation that enables it to be transmitted by Aedes Albopictus (Tiger mosquito). This was the cause of the actual plague in the Indian Ocean and a threat to the Mediterranean coast at present, requiring urgent meetings of health officials of France, Italy and Spain, but nothing seems to be moving that way.

Chickengunya :
Its an emerging epidemic in India, currently spread into many districts of andhra pradesh and maharashtra and karnataka affecting thousands of people each day.
Its falsly called as chicken gunya or chickengunya.. but it has no correlation with chickens. The confusion was created as the infection came simultaneusly withg bird flue in India.
Other names: Chikungunya (from the Swahili word for "stooped walk," or "that which bends up" depending on who you believe, referring to the posture of a person suffering from the disease)
Its also called as aakdya (stiffness) and maakdya (ape gait), in local languages in India. Marathi language!
Also called as CHIK or CHK.
how does chickungunya spread?
Virus is an arbovirus, spreads through arthropode vector the Aedes Egypti * and * Aedes albopictus, better known as the nasty Asian tiger mosquito, the same as Dengue or Yellow fever. Mosquito bites in day time unlike malaria. Size of this misquito is smaller than the anopheles.

It causes more of morbidity and less of mortality.
Illness is more debilitating and causes significant discomfort.
Deaths are not common.
Children and pregnants are more vulnerable.
symptoms

fever can be of high grade upto 102 F.
Continuous fever.. with partial relief by medicines.
Also there is significant muscle stiffness, myalgia and joint pains involving various joints mainly ankle and knees.
Rarely it has swollen small joints.
Symptoms usually last for 3 - 5 days,
but some joint pain or myalgia persists upto 2 weeks-2months.

Chikungnya
Chikungunya virus occurs in the East, Central and South Africa and in India and south-east Asia. It is the cause of an acute dengue-like pyrexia of sudden onset, associated with intense joint and muscle pains and a rash. In African epidemics case fatality was minimal but the virus has since been found in Thailand associated with a severe haemorrhagic fever, in which the dengue viruses also were involved and also in India. The name of the virus derives from an African language word meaning 'the thing causing bending up', from the contorted position of patients induced by joint pains.
How is chikungunya virus infection treated?
No vaccine or specific antiviral treatment for chikungunya fever is available. Treatment is symptomatic--rest, fluids, and ibuprofen, naproxen, acetaminophen, or paracetamol may relieve symptoms of fever and aching. Aspirin should be avoided
Infected persons should be protected from further mosquito exposure (staying indoors and/or under a mosquito net during the first few days of illness) so that they can't contribute to the transmission cycle.

Funny enough, chicken guniya has got nothing to do with chicken. It is found in African countries. In African language, it means "to bend". This is because people suffering from this disease have high fever and extreme pain in joints therefore they cant walk properly and hence "bent".
It is a non fatal disease and it can be prevented by keeping away from the mosquitoes especiallly those which breed in stagnant water.
