I usually do not introduce that sort of eatery, but as it is practical and "laid back", I though of it for my Ozzie and Kiwi friends. Very large portions of sausages and fried chips or chicken and chips for 780CF (about 6 US $). Great Vietnamese Pho Soups for about 900 CF (about 7 US $). Fresh juices of all sorts served in beer pint glasses for 400 CF (about 3 US $).

Higher class (probably the best restaurant in all New Caledonia), great decor and excellent French cuisine.
A simple but very precise carte and one full course menu at resonable prices considering the quality and volume.
The oyters are well chosen and properly served. The crab cannelonis have to be sampled. The lobster is an experience. The confit de canard is so traditional and the desserts a class of their own.
Expensive but extensive and sensible wine list with a few rarities kept in two different cellars

The oldest French restaurant in New Caledonia opened in 1970 by a French coiuple originally from French Algeria.
French traditional cuisine from the South West of France, especially Foie gras and Duck and of course cassoulet. The best buy is the assorted seafood platter for about 35 US $, enough of a main dish for two with lobsters, fish salad, crab salad and succulent oyters. The mussles and local fish also have to be tried. Short but well-balanced wine list. Very warm welcomein a Mediterranean/South West style country house.
reservations a must in peak seasons. japanese menu, although half of the patrons are locals.
