I saw that there is the starry night trilogy and thought, what is the connection between the paintings? Is there an underlying reason for the starry night filled skies? Here is a link to a page showing the Starry Night Trilogy:

Would you ask this question if the paintings done in daylight were called Sun-filled Sky? It is more unusual that artists paint night scenes but a triology, or a larger series, doesn't imply a connection other than that is the theme that the artist was interested in, or he couldn't paint in daylight.

Starry Night - is there a connection between the Starry Night paintings of Van Gogh?

I would have to say that the three different paintings describe three different feelings of the artist. If you consult the lyrics of the song, Vincent by Don McClean ou will realize he had a very bitter marriage in which his wife was not one to pay attention to him (you will also find in writings where he was so tired of her rantings he sent her his ear and said in effect, is this close enough for me to listen?). I would assume the paintings represent different places and times in his life in which to find solace. Where else but the sky/solar system/the night?
Is that too deep?
