Chikungunya is a relatively rare form of viral fever caused by an alphavirus that is spread by mosquito bites from the Aedes aegypti mosquito, though recent research by the Pasteur Institute in Paris claims the virus has suffered a mutation that enables it to be transmitted by Aedes Albopictus (Tiger mosquito). This was the cause of the actual plague in the Indian Ocean and a threat to the Mediterranean coast at present, requiring urgent meetings of health officials of France, Italy and Spain, but nothing seems to be moving that way.

The disease was first described by Marion Robinson[1] and W.H.R. Lumsden[2] in 1955, following an outbreak on the Makonde Plateau, along the border between Tanganyika and Mozambique, in 1952. Chikungunya is closely related to O'nyong'nyong virus[3].

Chikungunya is generally not fatal. However, in 2005-2006, 200 deaths have been associated with chikungunya on Réunion island and a widespread outbreak in Southern India (especially in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka Kerala and Andhra Pradesh). As of July 2006, Tamil Nadu reportedly had the largest number of cases, specifically centered around the southern districts of Madurai and Tirunelveli. The number of reported cases also registered a great increase in the districts of Salem, Chennai and Chengalpattu. As of September 2006, after the flood and heavy rains in Rajasthan in August 2006, India, thousands cases been detected in Rajasamand, Bhilwara, Udaipur, Chittorgarh district. However surprisingly there is no mention of all these in media or by Government

Treatment:
There is no specific treatment for Chikungunya. The illness is usually self-limiting and will resolve with time. Symptomatic treatment is recommended after excluding other more dangerous diseases. Vaccine trials were carried out in 2000, but funding for the project was discontinued and there is no vaccine currently available.

Chickengunya is a viral disease. It is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected mosquitoes, transmission is thought to occur mainly between mosquitoes and monkeys. Outbreakes are reported in tropical countries, southern Africa n and Asian countries. It causes febrile illness, characterized by fever, headache, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, muscle ache, rash, joint pain and stiffness. Progressive myosits and neuropathic pain has been seen in patient. Also low platelet counts and mild renal insufficiency is also noted.
The incubation period is anywhere from 2 - 12 days.
Fever typically lasts for few days , but leads to extreme weakness and fatigueness lasting for several weeks. Elderly people suffer from more long lasting effects in the form of weakness, joint pain, swelling and anorexia.
Serious complication can occur in infants , elderly and immunocompromised individual, but it is not common.
No vaccine or specific antiviral treatments is available.
Best treatment is rest, fluid maintain hydration, and relieve symptoms by acetaminohen, pacarcetamol and ibuprofen. Avoid aspirin during acute phase .
Maintain hydration and monitor Platelets, BUN & Creatinine.
Symptomatic treatment and hydration is the best treatment.
Clinicians in India ( talking to some of my friends) has seen some promising results using Chloroquine Phosphate antimalarial.... no major trials have been done. May be because of antiviral effect of medication or it may be affecting the virus like the medication working in malarial cycle exact effect not known.
Infection does confer life-long immunity.
Prevention of mosquito exposure is the best way to prevent infection . Mosquito breeding sites should be cleared. Insect repellent containing DEET or EPA-registered active ingradient should be used on exposed skin and use as directed.
To prevent spread a person suffering from infection should limit their exposure to mosquito bites and should stay indoors.
