how do credit reference agencies get your address when you move house? I know you tell the utillities like gas, water elec, etc, but not the CRA

You've answered your own question. If you have a credit account with utilities companies they will inform the CRA with your change of details.

if you tell bank, credit card company, utilities they notify the CRA as a "linked" address

The principle source is the unedited version of the Electoral Register, that's why you have to provide your previous address if you have moved within the last 3 years.

The agencies are kept informed by these companies also companies such as credit cards etc as your payment history is noted with them.
