"Is smoking cigarettes a sin?" It is if you think it is. God doesn't raise us all to be the same. The principle lined out in Romans 14 applies, I think. "You are basically poisoning yourself, so does smoking cigarettes classify under suicide?" It is if you think it is. To some it would be a sin of conscience. Those who think, "You cannot be a Christian and _____." To me, they are saying that they cannot be a Christian and ____. What they mean is that everyone cannot be a Christian and ____. But typically those who find themselves incapable of being Christian and ____ want to make everyone else live by the same rules. They are Legalists in my book, and I think Paul referred to them as the "weak" in Romans 14. "Or is it a sin because your body should be a 'temple' of sorts?" Our bodies are poisoned from the beginning. We are dying after all. So I would be "poisoned" whether I smoked or not. Dying people are already poisoned, it is not natural for humans to die. Death is something that came after Adam was created. It was imposed on him. " will this habit be a sole cause for you to be considered a 'goat' rather than a 'sheep'?" I suppose it's possible for someone to have that issue. But certainly not all of us. Again, if the conscience is against smoking, then while they smoke they are thinking that they are going to Hell for it. So they are living in the reality they are persuaded towards which states to them personally that they are committing a grave sin. I would tell such a person that they need to stop in a hurry, because in their mind they are committing rebellion against God. Yet, as Romans 14 states, they should not judge others for ____. And those who do ____ should not judge others for not ____.
