You do have to cut them out, but you don't necessarily have to shave your head, it depends on how long you let them grow out without re-dreading them, will depend on how close you have to cut them.

Either shave head or wait till they grow out enough to clip them off and still leave some hair. My best friend had em for years now he has a few left in the back -- but the rest he cut off -- still looked ok too. True dreads would never come undone so you have to cut them off. Are you planning on starting them yourself?? Wear a beanie it helps mat the hair after you twist and coat. And remember to pull them apart as they grow longer. The hair will want to mat together and you have to grab each strand and pull to the scalp to separate and retain the dreadlock.

You have a couple of option when you want to remove locs.

1) Big Chop. Cut all your locs off, leaving you with very little hair.
2) Grow out you hair without doing loc matinence, until new growth is at a length you want, then cut locs.
3) There is a tedious method that some Locticians can do that un-locs some of your hair , usually not the whole loc. But that is a very expensive.

I think you would have to cut it very short. Otherwise, I don't think you could ever get the tangles worked out.

as far as i know that is the only way.....its not like a braid or something that can easily be undone.....it their not taken care of properly it ends up looking like a wad of hair matted together.....are you really sure that you want that look.....

If they are long then you can cut your hair to where your new growth is
