religon? There is always an Atheist who is talking about why there could not be any mention of God in schools...Right? Then if an Atheist claims to not believe in any deity then Atheists have no religon. Then Atheism is not a religon and should be ignored by everyone else in the world. But if Atheism is a religon then it should be seperated from "State". It goes both ways. Atheist(no religon)=no efect...Atheist (religon)=seperation. No way out right? The truth is Atheism is a religon about no religon, which makes it a religon. A religon is a "belief" therefore if you "believe" that there is no deity then that is your religon. That does not always make sense because if I belived that beating people will take me to Heaven that would be my "belief" or religon. that would not make sense as well...right???Try to figure something out. Obviously I am Christian and in no way and Atheist. So go ahead and answer the question.

If Atheism=no belief, no deity, no whatever...then what do you classify it as? Uh...an opinion? Then it is my opinion to be Christian. Why can I not pray in a public school in the U.S.of A. a supposedly free country...!?!? Because Atheist opinions have subjected my religious beliefs in the Government to exile. I cannot pray in court before a trial or pray for God's before taking an exam in a public school because Atheism does not allow this to take place. To be a true Atheist means that you cannot tolerate the religious beliefs of someone else. Then why impose your "opinions" on the rest of religious people. All you need is a working brain to have an opinion on anything. Since a vast majority of you people believe that there is no God, why force your opinions on us. "In God We Trust" cannot be put on any government currency. Because there "has' to be a separation of church and state. If do not believe that birds fly and you do, why try to force my opinion on birds to you?

Atheism is a religion with a very organized belief system although some people who say they are atheists do so only to avoid making any desicion/ stand at all. Unfortunatly Atheists are so well organized that they have infiltrated every part of our country including and exspecialy the education of our children. The reasoning is, if you can get to them as children thier minds are more easily influenced. Many adults refuse to see the truth of this matter and see people like myself as fanatics.
Because Atheist are often quite eduacated they have taken a more subtle approach then many religions have over the years and instead of forcing their beliefs on us they are trying to take away our rights to practice on a day to day basis. This is not what America's founding fathers meant when they talked about seperation of church and state. The founder's of our country believed that government should not play a key part in religion but that religion should play a large part in government. The first amendment said that government should not rule the church but the founding fathers (all christians) based the laws of our country on thier religious beliefs and most if not all thought that a person should not be allowed to hold any type of position in government if they where not christians of good witness and testimony. Almost all of the original 13 states had laws negating any non-christian from public office. These philosophies have been so mis-quoted by both religious non-believers and true members of the atheistic religion that most people today do not recognize the truth even if it is pointed out to them.
In actual fact true christianity is the only religion that gives others the right(freedom of choice) to believe what they want to. No one can make another person recieve Jesus Christ as there personal savior because it is a choice. You either accept it or you don't.

To begin with, religion is A LOT MORE than just a set of beliefs. Reducing them to just that is a terrible over-simplification. Even for me, as an unbeliever.

Now, atheism is not a belief. Atheism is actually lack of beliefs in a magical or superior entity that is beyond proof. Christians believe that Christ is God's son, and they act on that belief. Atheists do not "believe there is no god". They just "don't believe there is a god". See the difference? One is an active attitude in favour of an idea. The other is the absence of this idea. Atheists don't give a damn about god. Theirs is a passive attitude about godly things.

Besides, religions are also a type of behaviour conditioned and determined by that basic belief. Atheists do not have any conditioned behaviour, other than just not accepting god. They don't go to church. They don't pray. They don't have a holy book... They are NOT a religion.

Now, isn't it funny that I, of all people, am telling you, a Christian, what religions are? If you don't even see this, I wonder what kind of a Christian you are. But then again, I don't mind. I'm not judging. I'm expressing my surprise.

EDIT: (Isn't this answer long?) Atheism is a philosophy. And yes. You may pray wherever you want, AS LONG AS you don't expect US to do anything about it. I mean, no praying on our side, no special silence, not anything. Do it, I won't condition you. But ONLY if you don't try to condition me, okay? How many times have you said after you passed an exam, that you passed it "thank god"? And I don't think you were punished for that, were you? It's really funny that you Christians, of all people, are shouting "censorship!" It's YOU who have imposed on US your religious festivities (Christmas, Easter, Dec. 8th -whatever THAT is called), your Christian names, your seven-day week (does 7 ring any bell?) your religious expressions, or expressions coming from religious concepts ("thank god", "goodbye -i.e.: God be by you", etc.)

Besides, religion is not JUST what it is supposed to be. It's ALSO a very powerful institution that has endeavoured to brainwash minds ever since Jesus's times. So, that is what I want to stop, NOT your religious rituals.

Atheist=Without a belief in deity

The absence of something does not create something. This seems to be what you are claiming. As for atheists saying that other atheists cannot belive in anything, they are lieing or not informed very well about atheism.

I am a Secular Humanist(my religion). I am also an atheist(my world view). I have established some beliefs. A belief in deity is not one of them.

I would never want Secular Humanism to have anything to do with the govt.

If you would like to discuss this in more detail feel free to send me an e-mail.

I think you're mixing up belief with religion. Belief is something you believe in. For example I believe that the world was created by a bunch of adolescent penguins on crack, but that doesn't make it a religion. Religion is a set of believes agreed upon by a number of people, often containig rituals and a moral code and always building upon a belief in a superhuman being or beings.
Atheism only fills the first criteria - it is agreed upon by many people. It doesn't contain any rituals and it doesn't contain any moral code. Note that I'm not saying that atheist have no moral code, I'm just saying that an atheist's moral code is not based on the fact that he/she is an atheist. Obviously, there is no belief in any superhuman beings. So atheism is not a religion, either is belief that beating people will get you into heaven.

i appreciate the argument, but i maintain that it's fundamentally flawed. a religion is more than simply a belief which is clearly outlined by the following definition.

Religion:

1. Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe.

2. A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship.

2. The life or condition of a person in a religious order.

3. A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader.

thus, while atheism is a belief system, i don't believe it truly fits the definition of religion per se.

as to its being ignored by everyone else in the world if it isn't a religion (which i believed you stated in your comments), there are

a. far too many atheists for that to be feasible
and
b. free thinking society is supposed to function partly on the liberty to believe what you like so long as it doesn't result in actions which interfere with the freedoms of others. this doesn't mean we have to like, accept, or even respect them, but we should allow others to have them.

having answered the question, i shall leave the rest alone out of respect for my friends of varying religions and my agnostic and atheist buds alike.

"Religion" is an organized group of people who believe and worship the same, thus it is also called "organized religion." We are not an organized group, we are only individual people who happen to have no belief in a deity in common, that is it.

Atheism, people who are just spiritual without following a religion, and all others outside of "religion" do not follow a religion...these things are not religions.

Also a religion is based on a belief, but a belief does not need to be based on a religion. Therefore belief does not equal religion, but religion does equal belief.

While we all talk about what we believe as "our beliefs," atheism really is not a belief, but rather the lack of it. It is more accurately called "non belief" or "disbelief."

Christians should be talking about not mentioning God in schools also, what happens to your feelings on this when the God they want to teach in school is Mohammad or magical flying dinosaurs, schools are government funded and religious teachings of any kind have a limited place in government founded institutions, that is an anthropology class or similar, this is not to protect just atheists, but it is meant to ensure your religious freedoms as well and your freedom to teach your children your religion.

A belief in atheism cannot be religion. The word religion comes from the Latin word "religio" ( I bind), "religire"(to bind) myself/oneself to a belief in and reverence for the supernatural power or powers regarded as creator of the universe (deity). The keyword for the binding is "reverence". Atheists don't have belief in and reverence for the unseen power. Atheism is a disbelief in the existence of God.

If I told you that pigs could fly, and you refused to believe me, would that mean you had a "religious belief" that pigs couldn't fly? Of course not. When you understand why disbelief in flying pigs isn't a religion, you'll understand why disbelief in an invisible skydaddy isn't a religion.

Atheism is disbelief in the absense of evidence. Religion is belief without evidence. The two are very different.
