Good Grief!! deedah is right, amanda b has no idea what it is like in Whitehorse. I'm going to guess the "oil patch" for deedah / Fort McMurry ??????
Whitehorse is an amazing place! Mind you, nothing like California - but if you enjoy the outdoors and wildlife you will be in heaven.
The people are very friendly.
Cost of living is certainly higher but then the wages are higher as well.
Availability of fresh foods, such as produce and dairy is not what you are used to - but you'll get used to it and you will appreciate what you had more when you go out on vacation.
We moved from British Columbia to Barbados 2 years ago and the cost of living and lack of fresh foods took us some getting used to. But we did so I know you can do it. Enjoy !!!!

The above answer contains many exaggerations. You won't see -70 degrees, but -40 could be quite common in December to February. Also, in June it's light enough to read a newspaper all night and in December it'll be dark most of the day but the six months in between are quite gradual (it's Whitehorse, not the north pole).

I am from manitoba it gets to be -40 below zero here but even farthe up north it gets to be -70 below zero. It is very expensive a jug of milk can run you 10 dollars. Everything in the winter has to be flown in so it can get costly. It is cold damn cold. Stay warm buy a really really good winter coat ski pants mitts toques scarves long underware and wooly socks and try not freeze to death. By next winter your body will be adjusted. The first winter will be hard but you will survive. Summer is apparently really nice and mild and beautiful.Oh yeah one more thing it is Dark like night time for 6 months in the winter and sunny for 6 months in the summer. The sun never sets or rises during these 6 months in both winter or summer. Good luck it is something else.

I hear it's a nice place to visit!! Why are you moving. It means fighting off the swarming black flies. Big biting mosquito's for most of the warmer months. I suppose if you are looking for adventure but don't expect a spa. Let us know how it goes.
