Both exist for the purpose of creating order and stability in society. The law uses the fear of physical punishment (such as confinement) to induce compliance, whereas religion uses the fear of spiritual punishment (Hell after death) to induce compliance.
They are different tools from the same toolbox, working together to create social order.
No society survives without law and few exist without religion. The strongest societies in history had both strong law and strong religion. (Egypt, Holy Roman Empire, USA)

Actually it's better said Religion vs Spirit:
The law says stop at the red light.
But a man with a pregnant wife that's just seconds from delivering a baby, takes precident over that red light. If the huband runs the red light for sake of his pregnant wife; then any police officer with a brain is gonna realize there's something more important than a stupid law;the birth of a new human being is more important. Why?Becuase God told us to be fruitful and multiply? What God said is more important than man's stupid little laws.
In a normal situation we would obey the law becuase the law is meant to keep decent and orderly traffic;but it was not meant to keep a life from being born. So the spirit takes president or importance over the law.
God actually kinda recognized this flaw in the old testament where they just had a bunch of laws. But the law doesnt cover the grey areas or the spirit of what was meant; thus we have a new testament where god says He will write his laws in our heart. So we know automatically when were doing something we ought not to.Despite all the denying in the world, we know when something is wrong or right in our heart.

Let me add a third element to the comparison: laws of physics.
And here's the comparison:
If you try to break the laws of physics, you will most likely fail. Not that you'll be punished. You will simply not be able (to challenge gravity, for instance).
If you break the laws of Congress, you run the risk of being punished with the jail or a fine, according to the case.
If you break the laws of religion... well, other than getting yourself a lot of bad comments about you, by the local chatter-boxes, nothing whatsoever is going to happen to you.
So, there's no cheating Newton. The legal system may be fooled, but you'll be punished for that. And religion bases its commandments and teachings on those systems, but the good thing is that nothing happens if you disregard it.

The basis for many religions was to establish laws (rules for common people to follow).
There was little or no difference between prehistoric "holy men" and judges.
But, humans have outgrown the need for holy men to judge people based on the way rocks reflect light or water flows in a vessel.
Our modern laws are based on a presumed system of justice and evidence unrelated to divination or fortune telling. But, the intended result is the same, to give common people rules to live by (which generally do not apply to the wealthy and/or elite).

Religion protects religion, while constitutional laws are intended to protect the weakest. It may not always work but it's the best system ever devised.
