its a paste made from garbonzo beans also known as chick peas.
Sometimes its very tasty, sometimes rather bland. Its usually awesome in an Indian or middle eastern restaurant.

If you want to buy ready made I like Tribe of 2 Sheiks best... it seems the most ethic using lemon juice instead of vingear.

it is spelled hummus, and it is fantastic. look for a recipe on foodnetwork.com. it is very easy to make.
