What do horse racing fans outside Australia think of the Melbourne Cup?

In Australia it is "the race that stops the Nation" so I was curious to know how much it is respected outside the country.

We have the Breeders cup triple crown in USA England has Epson derby theres the million(6on down)in the arab nations.Yes the Melbourne race is a good race but is a stepping stone for the classics.

I'm mostly into the "trotters" for gambling reasons. I've never heard of the Melbourne Cup. But then again I'm just into the type that pullws the rider who sits in a trailer type thing called a surrey, and just for gambling. So I'm not a "real" horse race enthusiast I guess.
