I have friends who eat gum, chips and other stuffs, but my dentist says the usual, no gum, hard foods, etc. My sister has braces and listen to the dentists advice and brushed like he told her, but she broke her brackets 6 times in 22 days, following his directions. My friends didn't listen to a word he said, but never got any of his stuff broken...

Well brushing your teeth like they say is good cause if you dont then when you get them off it will look bad. As far as food I didnt really stay away from much just dont bite into a hard peice of candy like its not hard or something. And as for gum do sugar free it gets stuck to your braces if its not sugar free. And if you are on date or something I would avoid things like burgers the bread will get stuck in the braces and thats a turn off. I had braces for 4 years so I know more about this than I want to.

Plaque gets easily caught in the fine metalwork of braces. For this reason, it is important to maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing and flossing thoroughly when wearing braces to prevent tooth decay, decalcification or unpleasant color changes to the teeth.

There is a small chance of an allergic reaction to the latex rubber in elastics or the type of metal in braces. However, there are latex-free elastics and other types of metal that can be used instead. If a person with braces believes he is allergic to his braces, it is important that an orthodontist or dentist be notified immediately

Mouth sores are usually triggered due to the oral obstructions from certain components of the braces. There are many products that can make a patient more comfortable, such as oral rinses, dental wax or dental silicone, and products that help heal the sores.

Braces can also be damaged if not careful. It is important to wear a mouthguard to prevent breakage when playing sports. Certain sticky or hard foods and confectionaries, gum and toffee for example, should be avoided because they can damage braces. Constantly breaking braces can prolong orthodontic treatment.

In the course of treatment, orthodontic brackets may occasionally pop off due to the force involved, or due to the adhesive cement weakening over time. The orthodontist should be contacted immediately for advice if this occurs. In most cases, the bracket must be replaced and re-applied to the tooth.

When teeth move, the arch wire may become displaced, causing it to painfully poke into the back of the patient's cheek. If this happens, it is recommended to apply a glob of dental wax to cushion it. The orthodontist must be called immediately to have it clipped, or a painful mouth ulcer is likely to form.

The dental displacement obtained with the orthodontic appliance, determines in most cases some degree of root resorption. Only in a few cases this side effect is large enough to be considered a real clinical damage for the tooth.

It also hurts when braces are tightend, causing the person wearing them to not want to eat for 2-3 days.

first couple of days your teeth will be sore so eat soft foods like apple sauce, soup, etc.
I like your friend didn't really listen to the dentist and I did fine. I think sugarless gum is less sticky so it won't stick as much to your braces, but I still ate tortilla chips, and later hard candy but your told not to eat corn/apples on the cob/ core and I think it's almost impossible to do anyway but just go easy the first week and then venture out from there, you don't have to follow all the rules ;)
Good luck with your braces :D

I had braces on for three years and I didnt follow what I was told and mine turned out perfect. The only thing I wouldn't do is kiss anyone else with braces on cause trust me it makes for an akward situation if you get stuck together. I did not even get any pain when I first got them on let alone when they were tightened and I kept eating what I usually eat straight afterwards.

I don't think it really matters, I didn't listen to any of the rules about what you can and can't eat and he never noticed, nothing broke, my teeth turned out as good as anyone elses when I had them off.
