Standard is equal to automatic. If you are talking about 35 mm cameras... it is standard now that most cameras set the aperature or lense openning which allows the amount of light that comes through the lense automatically. They also set the focus for you too. Some will set the shutter speed for you too. Manual usually means you have to manually set any or all of these for each picture you take.

Most cameras today have a "standard" Automatic mode that lets the camera set the exposure and focus. This usually works well for typical snapshots, and most people are usually happy with the results.

However, more serious photographers may prefer to set exposure and/or focus themselves to get better pictures. This is called manual control. Not all cameras allow this.

This is especially useful when the photographic conditions are less than perfect, for example in dim light or when trying to capture fast moving objects. Manual control also helps when trying to create more "artistic" effects.

To use manual controls, photographers must learn how to set the Aperture (lens opening size) and Shutter Speed (how long the lens is open). They also may choose to set the focus themselves. Different combinations of these create different results.

Learning to use manual controls effectively takes time, but many people enjoy it. There are many books and internet tutorials if you want to start learning.

Good Luck

never heard of manual or standard cameras, but i'm guessing "standard" refers to conventional film cameras (perhaps automatic too)...and maybe "manual" to those cameras that do not load/unload automatically
