Are they not capable of thinking for themselves?

Btw, this is not a pro/anti Christian question. It's about the habits of some answerers.

i think it is no different than writing an answer on a history test that you read in the book. these people read the bible and know the quotes by heart. but it seems they never took the time to realize what they really mean. because if they did, they would be telling you how it relates to their life, and very enthusiastically, im sure. i think that they just truly do not understand the meaning of what they are spewing out.

I don't know about all situations where this happens. I do know that sometimes people who only answer questions with Bible quotes instead of using their own words haven’t healed emotionally.

It is not just people who quote scriptures. If you notice, there are lots of people on YA! that do not answer the questions being asked. It is as if something in the questions triggers an automated response and the question never gets an intelligent answer. This is a very frustrating thing.

Some people use what I call “preaching” as a way to sooth their pain. Sometimes inappropriate “preaching” feels good to a person in pain. Most of the time they don’t even realize they are reacting from unhealed pain. With some who do this, It takes their mind off their own problems and puts it on controlling others. It can give a sense of, “If you listen to me and become converted to my way of thinking, I have done a good thing, I am ok“. It can also brings an adrenaline rush which is addictive. That is why some of the same people do it over and over again.

For Christians, the Bible teaches the opposite of this behavior. It is hard to find studies on this however because if most churches taught against this behavior, the people in the churches being taught this appropriate behavior would learn to study the Bible for themselves and have a personal relationship with God instead of relying on a “preacher” to “get them to God”. There are some preachers that do not want their congregation to think for themselves. Some people have wrong motives for preaching..

Biblical preaching is a very good thing. It is uplifting, inspiring and after hearing it I walk away better than I was before I heard it. As far as answering questions, sometimes it can be appropriate to quote scriptures. Knowing the difference between when to quote scripture and when it is inappropriate is a very wise thing.

Whether it is quoted scriptures or another form of “preaching” based on another belief system, listening to people who dissociate while they “preach” is very irritating.

I encourage everyone to try to be more balanced and think, especially when asked a question.

That's really interesting. On the one hand athiests gripe because Christians are constantly telling you what they think based upon the bible. Then you say I've read the bible and that's not the bible I've read.

Then if a Christian simply quotes the Word of God and let's God answer your question without any personal interpretation you complain because they only used bible quotes. Which is it gonna be. You just don't want to be told how to live your life by anybody. Whether it be a godly man or God himself. You want to live a selfish life seeking after personal pleasure and caring nothing about the damage you cause along the way.

I think that some people give quotes because they are trying to be accurate and some do not want to write the wrong thing and some don't know how to explain in their own words. I have seen a few questions that are not easily answered with few words. There are some that even if explained would not be believed because the people asking have already decided that they don't believe and are looking more for argument than answers.

We most are definitely are able to think for ourselves. We quote from the Bible (or aleast I do) because that is God's inspired Word of God. That is what we as Christians are suppose to live by/our guide here on earth. "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman needth not to be ashamed; rightly dividing in the Word of truth". 11 Timothy 2:15
There is nothing at all wrong with quoting scripture; it plainly says to study and learn. I'm not ashamed to study the Holy Bible; it has allot of history and it's the Word of God.
And I can think for myself..if I couldn't I wouldn't have 3 degree's and working on my Medical Degree. So I do think I have a brain!

I answer this way becuase there is only one truth. Many other book tell truth also and they are backed up by what is said in the Word of the Lord from the Holy Spirit! We are made of dirt, and the only thing that will survive and my Lord comes again is truth!

....and teaching them everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you (you are with me now Lord) always, even to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:20

Although Christians can and should encourage one another with scriptures and promises from the Bible, it drives me absolutely up the wall when verse are just thrown out there as arbitrary, generic answers to questions. Not only does it make Christians look intellectually brain dead, but it genuinely is not helpful when someone is asking for some assistance. I am a Christian, and I read and believe the Bible, but when someone asks me a question, I do my best to use the brain that God gave me to answer it. Yes, the Word has power, and God commands us to speak and study His Word, but not every question requires a scripture that was "cut and pasted".

Sometimes if I think someone else has articulated my feelings on a certain subject better than I ever could, I post what the other person has written and give them credit. If people feel that the Bible can express what they'd like to say in a way they feel is superior to their own abilities, more power to 'em.

That doesn't mean I'll necessarily like what they have to say or what the Bible is saying for them, though... it just means that I see no point in grumbling when they're doing the same thing I feel comfortable doing. They don't have to like what I'm saying even when I let someone else say it for me and vice versa. It's sitll permissible.

Although I may use references from that book to make a point to those people who claim such vast knowledge of one book, all of my answers come straight from the heart. That's the point I'm trying to make. Those people don't have an original thought in their head OR don't trust their God given intelligence to hold its own in a forum such as this. I hold to the belief that God speaks through people and that one can tell the purity of the heart by the words and actions of others. Spouting the party line doesn't tell me anything except that you have been brainwashed into thinking that you thoughts are BAD and or UNHOLY. Didn't God give you that brain to use? Surely that must be a sin.

I really respect them. You can't go wrong quoting the Bible, unless you take the quote it out of context, then that irratates me. It takes a good God given memory to retrieve these quotes and since it really is God's Word, they are the best and most intelligent answers. Psalm 119:105 "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."
