My dog will push her way through my small children to escape or sneek away when I'm not looking. She always comes back if I can't find her, but she's been getting into trouble everyonce in awhile. I do tie her up, but she has to come inside too.

You are right to be concerned about your dog- it's dangerous for her to run away and not healthy for her to remain tied up all the time.

First of all, is she spayed? This makes so much difference in the behavior of a pet who is an "escape artist"! If not, schedule a spay immediately! If she is spayed, what we are dealing with is a behavioral issue.

One of the most sucessful ways I have found in dealing with young children and dogs is baby gates. The children can't open them, and the dog can't get out. It's important to separate the dog from the doors, as young children are unaware of the dangers of letting your pet go free. When you bring your dog indoors, keep her in a confined space- maybe the kitchen. Put her bed and bowls in the room and put up a baby gate to keep her confined. She'll be able to enjoy being with the family and inside, but she wn't be able to follow the little ones outside. Also, the gate will keep your kids out of the kitchen, where you might not want them to be (unattended, of course)!

Good luck!

The dog probably wants and needs exercise. A dog that's pooped out will be very happy to stay home. All of you can take a walk together, or go to the dog park. Go to the dog whisperer-Cesar. He's wonderful.. But I know exercise is very IMPORTANT!

I would suggest leashing her even if its just to transport her to and from the yard. If she is getting out of your door because of the kids opening it then you should be locking it and make it a rule that they cannot open it themselves.
