It's often used prior to or during surgery. It's a devise that keeps the heart and lungs functioning while care is provided.

"Before the surgery, an Echmo machine had been keeping the child alive. The device acted as his heart and lungs."

Usually happens when a baby inhales its own meconium prior to or during birth. The ecmo machine is used to keep baby alive until the lungs recover the ability to oxygenate blood. Some babies can be on this device for months - like my stepdaughter. She's 18.

it's ECMO, and it stands for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. to break that phrase down, it's basically saying that because his lungs were unable to do so, his blood were being oxygenated (membrane oxygenation) by this machine, not his own body (extracorporeal.) similar to a dialysis machine, his blood was taken from his body from one site and run through this machine while simultaneously being put back into his body at another site when it was finished in the machine. while in the machine, oxygen was put into his blood and carbon dioxide was taken out. it's usually done for newborns whose lungs are either damaged or not developed enough to do this themselves.
