I need to determine how much to charge a local wine shop/store to insert 1 piece of promotional material (much like you would find at a tourist info booth) into a dental conference registrants packages. Any ideas what the average profit would be from the average priced bottle of wine?

@ 80 - 100% ... if you buy your wine for $12.00, the average selling price would be $22.00 - $24.00, depending on vintage, availability and amount made. The better the year, smaller bottling run and availability to the consumer will garner a higher price.

The profit completely depends on how much the bottle of wine cost. This may help a little... a bottle of wine typically contains 5 glasses of wine in restaurant portions... the restuarant is most likely vender prices, so maybe knock off $3-4 from the liquor store prices... find out how much the restaurant charges per glass of wine X 5 and subtract them. At the bar I work at, it's close to $20 per bottle but we serve very nice wine.

Depends on where you are at. Country...state...etc.

Some states like OHIO for instance have a mandatory 33% markup on any retail bottle of wine.
Plus to distribute alcohol you will also need to apply for a liquor license. There are many different levels of licensing depending on what type of venue you are running.
Alcohol sales/distribution is a highly controlled venture. Anybody can't just wake up and start selling booze.

Average profit would be based on markup. Markup can be 33 - 45%. Gross Margin would be found by taking the selling price minus the cost. Take that number and divied it by the selling price to get gross profit. Example: Cost is $2. Multiply by 1.33 equals $2.66. Divide $2.66 by .66 and you get 24.81% as a gross margin.

Here in California the common practice is 50% markup...ie. store buys bottle for $10.00, sell it for $15.00

Discounters sell for as little as 8% markup - $10.00 bottle sells for $10.80

Restaurants and hotels for as much as 200% to 400% markup.
You do the math this time.
